Late-seeded cover crops in a semiarid environment: overyielding, dominance and subsequent crop yield

چکیده

Abstract Interest in cover crops is increasing but information limited on integrating them into crop rotations especially the relatively short growing season northern Great Plains. A 3-yr research project, initiated 2009 near Mandan, North Dakota, USA, evaluated (1) what impact may have subsequent cash yields and (2) whether mixtures are more productive provide additional benefits compared to monocultures. The study 18 different monocultures that were seeded August following dry pea ( Pisum sativum L.). year, spring wheat Triticum aestivum L.), corn Zea mays soybean Glycine max L.) field treatments a non-treated control. lack of timely precipitation resulted low yield 17 g m 2 100 77 2008 2010, respectively. Subsequent was not affected by late-seeded crops. Cool-season than warm-season some 2010. Relative total did differ from one any mixture suggesting overyielding occur. Species selection rather species diversity most important contributor yield. Cover can be grown short-season Plains, timing critical.

The effects of different autumn-seeded cover crops on subsequent irrigated corn response to nitrogen fertilizer

A common crop rotation in the west Iran is wheat-fallow-corn. The fallow period after wheat harvest (during fall and winter) can lead to soil erosion, nutrient losses (e.g. nitrate leaching) and offsite movement of pesticides. This period is an ideal time to establish a cover crop. In order to investigate the effects of different autumn-bseeded cover crops on subsequent irrigated corn response ...

Replacing bare fallows with cover crops in fertilizer-intensive cropping systems: A meta-analysis of crop yield and N dynamics

The availability of Haber-Bosch nitrogen (N) has permitted agricultural intensification and increased the productive capacity of agroecosystems; however, approximately 50% of this applied fertilizer N is lost from agricultural landscapes. Extensive efforts have been devoted to improving the N use efficiency of these systems. Diversified crop rotations using cover crops to provide a variety of e...

Effect of Incorporation of Leguminous Cover Crops on Yield and Yield Components of Maize

The low and declining productivity of many tropical soils are the major constraints limiting the realization of the improved genetic potential of crops that are now available. The need to take appropriate measures to check this decline in soil productivity is urgent as the rate of deterioration is on the increase and if not checked will have serious implications for future food demands of the i...

Modelling a Millet Cover Crop and Subsequent Maize Production in the Tropical Cerrados of Brazil

Estimation of clover content of mixed swards is difficult in practise. We are currently in the processof developing several on-farm methods for clover content estimation. 1. Photos with various clovercontents are published in the Internet. 2. Yield samples with known area from several points of thefield are separated for clovers and grasses and weighted. 3. The clover content of...
